Towards the end of last week I did a final summer holiday skin and haircare shop to make sure I had everything I needed before going away. I’ve not got long to wait now! I know some people like to pick up their suncreams/skincare from the airport before they fly so they don’t have to take up space in their suitcase, but I’m one of those people who feels SO much better knowing everything I could possibly need has been bought and packed without leaving it until the last minute. Keeping your skin and hair as healthy and as safe from damage as possible is so important when going abroad – the baking sun, salty sea water and having to blow dry and style your hair every single evening really doesn’t do you any favours. I’ve topped up on all my favourite tried and tested products, some of which are part of my every day routine, some I only use when going abroad or when it’s really hot here in England, but all of these items I definitely can’t be on holiday without.
Ok so I know this is not technically skin ‘care’, but I couldn’t leave this one out. I have the worst skin type for natural tanning. I mean I do turn kind of brown if I’m abroad for long enough, but I’m so jealous of people like my sister who has olive skin and can be in the sun for only an hour and still catch an amazingly glowing tan! I’m bored of spending most of my holidays slightly red and only developing a tan just before we leave. Bondi Sands is my absolute favourite fake tan brand as it’s non streaky, not at all orange and fades really evenly – there’s nothing worse than becoming patchy and streaky a few days or so after application. I love this product so much that I usually apply it once every week (normally a Thursday or Friday) so I’m glowing and ready for the weekend. I’ve had to put it first on this list as for holidays, I only apply it once, the night before flying, and it does wonders for my confidence on my first few days in the sun. I’m sure that every girl who fake tans is with me on this… every outfit looks so much better with a tan, especially bikinis! Even though self tan isn’t technically skincare, it’s a main product in my summer skin routine and I feel so much better arriving on holiday with a pre tan before developing a natural one as this one fades.
A given when it comes to summer skincare is suncream. There’s so many different brands and types of suncream around but Garnier Ambre Solaire is my favourite one. I prefer the non greasy consistency of this product over other more oily suncreams and I feel like it absorbs into the skin a lot quicker. It’s water resistant which I love as I’m always in and out of the pool or sea and as gross as it sounds, I also find it doesn’t sweat off as much in the heat as oily based creams do. If I don’t keep topped up with suncream on holiday I can easily burn and start peeling instead of tanning, so starting off the holiday with a high SPF like 30 for places that aren’t normally in the sun is the safest option for me. I also have the same in SPF 15 for my lower arms and legs and for the rest of my body towards the second half of the holiday when my skin is more used to the sun.
This lip protection balm is a great little find which I actually copied from my Mum. It’s so hydrating and tastes amazing as it’s made with natural coconut oil. It’s SPF 15 so helps protect your lips from burning which is fab as my lips are one of the things that I often forget about when it comes to protecting from the sun. The packaging is the perfect size to pop in my beach or bum bag and is great to slap on dry lips after swimming in the sea.
Coming from the same brand is my all time favourite body lotion to use when I’m abroad. I’ve always used this as after sun ever since I was little as my mum swore by it and it’s AMAZING. It’s super moisturising and helps bring down any redness in areas where you may have caught a bit too much sun. This lotion stays soaked into the skin for hours and I never feel the need to reapply again before going out for dinner or drinks, which I often find needs to be done with other after suns I’ve tried in the past. I always purchase the large 400ml bottle with the pump as it’s a lot more easier and less messy to apply pump after pump compared to using the normal flip lid bottle. As well as being the most soft, moisturising lotion ever, my favourite thing about it is that it makes you smell just like chocolate – there really isn’t anything not to like about this product (unless you don’t like chocolate)!
I first tried this serum just a few months ago as I was aiming to get my skin as naturally bright as possible ready for the summer months when I wanted to wear less foundation and more tinted moisturiser. I’ve been using it every night since, applying after my usual makeup remover and cleanser and before my night cream. After using this serum for a while now I’ve found that the few little scars I had from old spots have calmed right down and any general redness on my face has balanced out making my complexion more even. I’m looking forward to taking this with me on holiday and using it each night, as not only does it help your skin tone look naturally even ready for makeup-less days in the sun, I feel it also adds another layer of moisture to the skin.
Now coming onto hair, this moisture filled treatment from Aussie is my absolute favourite haircare product – it has been for the past few months and I don’t think I’ll ever stop using it going forward. My hair is quite thin and has always had bad split ends from heat damage. Even with naturally wavy hair (so hardly ever using straighteners) my poor thin hair still gets badly effected from my hairdryer. As my hair was getting worse and worse I decided to try the 3 minute miracle to see if it would save my damaged ends. After one treatment I couldn’t believe the difference in softness, and after a few more uses and a few more haircuts my hair hadn’t looked or felt so good in ages! I’ve not looked back since and love using this a good few times a week. This really is going to be a life saver for my hair on holiday, as after swimming in either chlorinated or sea water every day I have to wash (and blow dry) my hair every day too. If you also suffer from thin hair that’s susceptible to breakage and split ends and have not yet discovered this treatment, GO BUY IT!
Just like the Aussie 3 minute miracle treatment, this styling heat protection spray from Mark Hill is another haircare staple for me. Since realising just how damaged my hair used to be, I never blow dry my hair without any sort of heat defence. This one is my current favourite as I feel it gives a great layer of protection to my hair, whereas some heat defence products are not as effective and the hair still gets easily damaged. The Mark Hill spray is especially great for holidays and travelling as it gives a natural mousse/hairspray-like hold and shine on the hair it’s been used on, as well as giving it protection. It’s almost like two products in one so is really practical when you’ve only got so much space in the suitcase. Normally priced at just over a fiver, you really can’t go wrong with this haircare product that works so well.
I hope you’ve found this insight into my favourite holiday skin and haircare products interesting, and hopefully there’s something new to you on here that you think would work for you! Have you got any essential products that you swear by?
